Federal Ministry of Education enforces teacher reform, mandating TRCN registration while NTI focuses on in-service training and professional development

Federal Ministry of Education has announced a sweeping realignment of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) and the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI) in a bid to strengthen professionalism and improve the quality of education across the country.

In a press release issued on Sunday through its official X account, the ministry confirmed that all teachers must now be registered with the TRCN before they can enter a classroom.

Under the new structure, the NTI will concentrate on in-service training and Community Professional Development programmes, while the TRCN will regulate and license teachers nationwide.

Education Minister Dr Maruf Alausa unveiled the updated guidelines, covering teacher registration, welfare, professional development, compliance monitoring, and curriculum standards.

“No teacher will stand before a Nigerian classroom without TRCN registration and licensing. This guarantees competent and professional teaching for every child,” Alausa declared.

He described the reform as “about results and sustainability,” stressing that Nigerian children deserve to be taught and supported by the best-qualified teachers, aligning with the administration’s Renewed Hope agenda.

Last week, the minister had warned secondary schools to ensure their staff hold valid certifications or risk losing their accreditation to serve as examination centres.

From 2027, he said, approval for public and private schools to host examinations including WASSCE, NECO, NABTEB and NBIAS would depend on teachers’ TRCN certification.

The move marks a decisive step towards raising standards in education, placing teacher quality and professional accountability at the core of Nigeria’s future learning outcomes.
