Finnish police arrest Nigerian separatist leader Simon Ekpa and four others on terrorism-related charges, sparking international attention.

The Finnish Central Criminal Police have confirmed the arrest of Simon Ekpa, a Nigerian separatist leader and self-proclaimed Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government In-Exile. Ekpa, along with four others, was detained on charges linked to terrorism.

According to the Päijät-Häme District Court, Ekpa was remanded in custody on suspicion of public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent.

The Finnish police stated that the four other suspects were arrested for financing terrorist activities.

A statement released by the Finnish authorities described Ekpa as “a Finnish citizen of Nigerian background, born in the 1980s.”

It elaborated on the allegations, noting, “The police suspect that the man has promoted his efforts from Finland by means that have led to violence against civilians and authorities as well as other crimes in the region of South-Eastern Nigeria.”

Ekpa’s activities have long been a source of controversy. He is alleged to have spearheaded actions that resulted in violence, destruction, and loss of life in Nigeria’s South-East region.

Finnish authorities also confirmed that all five suspects were arrested earlier this week.

This development follows reports of escalating violence attributed to Ekpa’s influence, including attacks on public transport and property in Nigeria.

In the past, Ekpa has openly supported the Biafran Liberation Army and declared measures such as curfews that have disrupted life in the South-East.

The Nigerian Society of Engineers partners with agripreneurs to launch demo farms nationwide, tackling food insecurity and creating jobs.

The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Integrated Lancaster Farms and Assetrise Limited, two leading Nigerian agripreneur firms, to establish demonstration farms across the nation.

This strategic move, announced at the NSE’s international conference in Abuja, aligns with the society’s “rebirth agenda” aimed at enhancing food security and creating employment opportunities.

NSE President Margaret Oguntala described the partnerships as a significant step towards addressing Nigeria’s agricultural challenges.

“This initiative will not only provide job opportunities but also foster innovation in agriculture. It benefits all stakeholders involved,” Oguntala stated during the signing ceremony.

The demonstration farms will introduce cutting-edge technologies to tackle food insecurity while supporting the NSE’s objectives to drive sustainable development.

Oguntala reiterated the society’s commitment to advancing Nigeria’s agricultural sector in line with the theme of this year’s annual conference.

The MoUs also mark the beginning of a groundbreaking incubation programme. Assetrise Limited’s Group Managing Director, Oluwadurotimi Ojamamoye, revealed that the initiative will enable graduates to transition into successful farm owners.

“At the Federal University of Agriculture, we have secured 100 hectares of land to cultivate millions of yam tubers, with plans to expand to 1,000 hectares.

This programme aims to support 1,500 students, empowering each with one hectare upon graduation,” Ojamamoye said.

Ojamamoye also highlighted the company’s achievements in Lagos State, where its operations have shattered stereotypes about limited arable land.

“In 2023, we cultivated over a million yam tubers in Epe. This year, we’re on track to deliver nearly 3 million, alongside a Smart City project spanning 3,000 hectares,” he added.

Patrick Obidoyin, Co-founder of Integrated Lancaster Farms, echoed similar optimism. “This partnership empowers youth and reduces unemployment. Nigeria possesses the resources to transition from food deficits to surpluses,” he stated.
