Lagos State govt takes step to develop circular economy

Published

on

The Lagos State Government is making a move to fully implement a circular economy, encouraging residents to reduce waste being generated, reuse and recycle.

Towards this, the State has convened stakeholders’ forum in Ikeja on facilitating the transition into a circular economy and the building of an environmentally resilient State.

Chief Resilient Officer, Lagos State Resilience Office, Dr Folayinka Dania explained that already, a number of projects have been embarked upon to kickstart the full implementation process.

Dania listed this to include the Eko Circular Podcast to educate residents, a Lagos Circular challenge for business owners to help Lagos achieve the set goals and several multi-agencies’ projects involving Lagosians in the efforts to reduce the over 13,000 metric tonnes of waste generated daily in the State, all of which end up at the dump sites.

“There are various things you can do in terms of resilience as a person living in Lagos, sort your waste, separate plastic, it will have a lot of impact, it will reduce waste in land fills, reduce flooding to a large extent, it will ensure some of the emissions that go into the atmosphere from burning some of these things, in the last, we come to say this is what we are doing, but now we are saying as a resident, be part of the process, this is how we can ensure sustainability” Dania said.

According to her, “Circular economy is about reducing waste to the barest minimum. Lagos State, as it currently stands generates about 13,0000 metric tonnes of waste per day and what we are propagating is how do we ensure that we can turn this around in ways that are good for the climate, good for health and good for the people.

“What we are trying to do is to put in place structures that ensure that we reduce our waste to the barest minimum by reducing our waste and by also recycling our waste and that is all what circular economy is about.”

The General Manager, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, LASEPA, Dr Dolapo Fasawe, whose agency has been able to eliminate single use plastic, pointed out that circular economy has become a global trend.

Fasawe noted that though plastic products could be totally banned, yet, residents could generate wealth, by recycling them while also making the environment safe.

“People, Planet, Profit: that’s the key message of a circular economy and environmental sustainability, if you are using non-biodegradable plastic, please reuse it, refurbish it, you can use it up to ten times and then recycle it.

“There are off-takers who will take your plastic and exports in pellets to China and used it in making chairs that would be brought back and sold here in Nigeria, that’s an example of a circular economy,” he said.

The Consultant engaged by the State to facilitate Circular economy and Resilience, Ms Nonny Ugboma announced that three Council areas, namely; Ikeja, Alimosho and Oshodi had been chosen as pilots for the Circular Economy transition process.

“Over the next six months, residents in the pilot Council Areas would be encouraged to embrace a circular economy and monitored for behavioural change,” she said.

She added: “What we are doing is to facilitate the integration of different things that are happening in the circular economy space and environmental resilience space.

“Essentially, there are four deliverable for us, we are going to promote the circularity gap working with the agencies and we are also going to produce some contents that will help the leveraging and to educate and inform, get collaborations across the state on circular economy and resilience. Also, we will help develop a dashboard that would integrate private sectors, public sectors, individuals and the community.”

Two Americans, One Dane Win Chemistry Nobel

Published

The Nobel Chemistry Prize was on Wednesday awarded to a trio of chemists from the US and Denmark who laid the foundation for a more functional form of chemistry.

Americans Carolyn Bertozzi and Barry Sharpless, together with Denmark’s Morten Meldal, were honoured “for the development of click chemistry and bioorthogonal chemistry,” the jury said.

The award marks the second Nobel for 81-year-old Sharpless, who won the chemistry Nobel in 2001.

Only four other individuals have achieved the feat, including Polish-born Frenchwoman Marie Curie.

Click chemistry “is an elegant and efficient chemical reaction that is now in widespread use,” the jury said in a statement.

“Among many other uses, it is utilised in the development of pharmaceuticals, for mapping DNA and creating materials that are more fit for purpose,” it added.

“This year’s Prize in Chemistry deals with not overcomplicating matters, instead working with what is easy and simple,” Johan Aqvist, Chair of the Nobel Committee for Chemistry, said in the statement.

The trio will share the Nobel award sum of 10 million Swedish kronor ($917,500), will receive the prize from King Carl XVI Gustaf at a formal ceremony in Stockholm on December 10, the anniversary of the 1896 death of scientist Alfred Nobel who created the prizes in his last will and testament.

Sharpless, a professor at Scripps Research in California, “started the ball rolling” and “coined the concept of click chemistry” around 2000, the jury said.

“Shortly afterwards, Morten Meldal and Barry Sharpless –- independently of each other –- presented what is now the crown jewel of click chemistry: the copper catalysed azide-alkyne cycloaddition,” the jury said.

Meldal, 68, is a professor of chemistry at the University of Copenhagen.

Bertozzi, who is a professor at Stanford in the United States, then took it to “a new level.”

“She developed click reactions that work inside living organisms. Her bioorthogonal reactions take place without disrupting the normal chemistry of the cell,” the jury said.

“I’m absolutely stunned, I’m sitting here and I can hardly breathe,” Bertozzi told reporters via telephone, minutes after the announcement.

Last year, the academy honoured Germany’s Benjamin List and US-British dual national David MacMillan for their development of a precise tool for molecular construction known as asymmetric organocatalysis.

On Monday, the medicine prize went to Swedish paleogeneticist Svante Paabo for his discoveries on the genomes of extinct hominins and human evolution.

Then on Tuesday, physicists Alain Aspect of France, John Clauser of the United States and Austria’s Anton Zeilinger were given the physics prize for developing experimental tools that helped prove quantum entanglement — a phenomenon Albert Einstein dismissed as “spooky action at a distance”.

The chemistry prize will be followed by the highly watched literature and peace prizes, announced on Thursday and Friday respectively.

The peace prize is expected to hold a special significance this year given the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

  4. The Pastor asked VSE Joseph Olorunnishola to explain himself.
  5. VSE Joseph Olorunnishola stated that he did not do anything wrong as he was simply carrying out the decision made by his then Executive Council members in the infamous March 5, 2021 memorandum of 7-point demand and Declaration of Independence notably from the Pastor.
  6. Superior Evangelist Homer Williams, Superior Evangelist Akande and Superior Evangelist Oziegbe all indicated their efforts at urging VSE Joseph Olorunnishola to rescind the letter as requested by the Pastor. 15. VSE Joseph Olorunnishola was asked by some representatives of the diocese to take back his false conclusion of the meeting that “the status quo remains” and a small skirmish ensued.
  16. VSE Joseph Olorunnishola, in his own mind, falsely concluded that the status quo remains, which perhaps could be his primary objective for coming to the meeting and thereby creating some form of legitimacy.
  17. VSE Joseph Olorunnishola was forgiven by the pastor but not restored.
