The Oyo State Government, on Monday, described Saturday’s invasion of the State Secretariat in Ibadan, the state capital, by self-acclaimed Yoruba Nation agitators as an act of terrorism.

The state Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, who spoke with journalists in Ibadan on Monday, condemned the act, adding that there are better ways of agitation other than craving for bloodshed.

Theheute reports that some masked people in military camouflage suspected to be Yoruba Nation agitators invaded the Secretariat, Agodi in Ibadan, Saturday morning.

Eyewitnesses told our correspondent that the masked men were stationed at different locations within the area.

The situation, according to the investigation, sent panic to residents and road users along the routes.

Businesses and residents around Bodija, Ikolaba, and Awolowo were said to have quickly locked their shops and doors and those who were about to open for the day’s business turned back.

The Commissioner also said sponsors of the invasion have landed themselves in trouble.

He said, “Sponsors of the invasion of the Governor and State House of Assembly’s office have succeeded in landing themselves in serious trouble.

“Attempting to barge into the hallowed chambers of the legislature and take it over with an arsenal of seven pump action submachine guns and over 700 live cartridges, is an act of terrorism.

“‘The conduct of Prof Banji Akintoye, a well-known Yoruba nation agitator represents the quintessential wisdom and civilisation of the Yoruba race.

“Oyo state remains the most peaceful state in Nigeria and Saturday’s incident will not take away that popular belief.”

Normalcy has since returned to Ibadan, the state capital and residents are going about their normal duties.

The Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke has set up an action committee to implement decisions reached between the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and the Osun State Government to combat sexual violence through mobile courts and other measures.

Adeleke had during a visit to the Federal Minister of Women Affairs affirmed his commitment for immediate implementation of the resolution of the Nigerian Governor’s Forum for the establishment of Mobile Courts dedicated to addressing issues of sexual and gender based violence, child abuse in the form of street begging and expedited trial of women and children held in correctional facilities.

He had also noted that in the spirit of Lent, Easter, and Ramadan period, he had directed his Commissioner for Justice to prepare an executive order to free all unjustly incarcerated women in the state.

According to the Governor, the Justice Ministry will compile a list of affected women across the state to be granted executive pardon in furtherance of protection of women rights.

To give effect to the resolutions reached with the Federal Ministry in line with the position of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum position, Governor Adeleke has put up an action committee comprising of the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hon (Mrs) Ayobola Awolowo, the Commissioner for Federal Affairs, Hon (Mrs) Adenike Adeleke, the Attorney General to be represented by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Legal Matters, Barrister Nurudeen Kareem Esq.

Others include the Commissioner for Youth Development, Hon Moshood Olagunju and President of the National Association of Women Journalists(NAWOJ), Abisola Ariwodola.

The committee is charged with putting to effect the communique of the joint meeting between the state Governor and the Federal Minister of Women Affairs.

The Nigerian Navy (NN) says it has begun investigation on how one of its civilian staff members, Mr Ifeanyi Onumaegbu, died.

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice-Adm. Emmanuel Ogalla, announced this in Lagos on Thursday.

He explained that Onumaegbu died at the Nigerian Navy Reference Hospital (NNRH) Ojo, Lagos, where he worked.

He explained further that the deceased was a civilian staff of the Ministry of Defence attached to the Laboratory Department of the NNRH since 2009.

”The navy is deeply saddened by the demise of Mr Ifeanyi Onumaegbu and the circumstances surrounding his death.

”On March 31, he was found lifeless in his office at NNRH.

“A preliminary investigation revealed that on March 26, the deceased was involved in an altercation with a civilian lady and some NN personnel in Navy Town Barracks,” he said.

Ogalla said that all suspected personnel and the civilian lady involved in the previous altercation had been identified and “are currently under close custody”.

He also said that NN had facilitated the movement of the deceased’s body to a reputable government hospital in Lagos based on the request of the family for an autopsy.

“The NN further wishes to assure his family and the public that all necessary measures are being taken to unravel the cause of his death.

“Any person found culpable would be prosecuted according to extant laws,” he said.

The protest was held across all the civilian personnel units of the Ministry of Defence.
