Anthony Joshua vs Oleksandr Usyk undercard: Former champ Callum Smith returns after frightening knockout win

The last time Callum Smith fought on an Anthony Joshua vs Oleksandr Usyk undercard he could not celebrate his victory.

He iced Lenin Castillo with a single shot of such frightening power that it was chilling to see. Castillo was treated by paramedics at once and stretchered out of the ring.

“As much as you want to win, that’s the last thing you want to see. Now and again we do get a bad one in boxing where there’s long lasting damage, no one wants to see that,” Smith told Sky Sports.

“I knew it was potentially a tricky fight,” he continued. “He’d never been stopped. But I felt really, really good at the weight, I felt really strong and landing early on it was having an effect on him and obviously landed a good shot which finished the fight.”

Smith answered those questions about himself. He knew he was tough enough for the move up to light-heavy as well. He has boxed in title fights against Alvarez and George Groves but has never been dropped as a professional.

In fact, amateur and pro, there is only one man who has ever put him down – Liam Smith, who boxes on September 3 live on Sky Sports. His older brother dropped him with a body shot in sparring when they were teenagers.

“My dad kicked off on him!” Smith laughed.

Callum Smith’s next opportunity to earn another world title shot comes on August 20 when he boxes Mathieu Bauderlique on the undercard of Anthony Joshua’s rematch with Oleksandr Usyk live on Sky Sports Box Office.

“[People] kind of assume I’ve been given an easy touch in a final eliminator but he’s a good fighter, he’s European champion,” Smith said.

“He went to the Rio Olympics. He got the other bronze [medal]. He’s got good skills, he’s got good amateur pedigree, he’s got good boxing ability. A little bit heavy handed when he lets them go. It’s a tough fight. It’s got my respect, it’s one I’m taking seriously.

“He can handle himself, he’s a good fighter and it’s a big opportunity for himself. It’s probably his biggest fight and there’s a lot at stake for him.”

But he added: “If I’m at my best I can beat anyone in the world at this weight and that includes Bauderlique.”

Smith, a former champion, is a seasoned fighter now but still determined to succeed.

“When everything gets tough you just need that reason why and as long as you’ve got it, you’ll push through,” he explained. “You don’t have to love it. You’ve just got to crave the results so bad that the rest of it’s irrelevant. I’ve always been goal driven and motivated by achievements and the goal of becoming a two-weight world champion is what gets me through.

“I’ve always felt that I want to be a world champion so bad that I’d chase it and I’d go through anything to get there.

“As long as you want it bad enough, I think the rest of it is irrelevant, you’ll do whatever needs to be done to get it done.

“I know what I’m capable of, I know my goals and I know what I can do. I know I can become a two-weight world champion and that thought of achieving is what drives me and I keep chasing and I do believe I will get it.

Nigerian basketball league improvement

Former Nigeria Basketball Federation board member Osita Nwachukwu calls for urgent improvement in the Nigerian basketball league, citing lack of investment.

Osita Nwachukwu, a former board member of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), has emphasised the urgent need for improvement in the Nigerian basketball league.

For three consecutive years, the NBBF Premier League has been shortened, a move Nwachukwu believes hampers the development of basketball in the country.

He expressed concern over the lack of major investment in the sport, which he sees as a key obstacle to growth. “There is currently no significant investment in Nigerian basketball, and consequently, there is no return on investment,” Nwachukwu stated.

He further lamented that the state of basketball in Nigeria is virtually non-existent, with current efforts sustained by passion rather than structured support.

Reflecting on his time on the NBBF board, Nwachukwu mentioned that various proposals aimed at revitalising Nigerian basketball were put forward.

He remains optimistic that these initiatives can still be implemented, but stresses that immediate action is required to build a thriving basketball league in the country.

He expressed this view in an interview following the Nigeria Football Federation’s (NFF) decision to extend Eguavoen’s interim role.

Nwabara insists that Eguavoen’s achievements with the team make him deserving of a permanent contract. Nwabara pointed out that some of the previous foreign managers lacked the necessary skills to coach the team effectively, resulting in poor performance.

According to Nwabara, the NFF should trust local talent and allow Eguavoen to continue as the head coach, building on his success in recent matches.

The NFF confirmed Eguavoen’s role would continue, as he prepares to lead the Super Eagles in their upcoming 2025 AFCON qualifying matches against Libya.

Interim coach Augustine Eguavoen now leads the team into the 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Libya.

French football tactician Hervé Renard recently revealed that he was on the verge of becoming the head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

Renard, who has enjoyed successful stints coaching Ivory Coast and Zambia, shared that he was approached by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) following the unexpected departure of Finidi George in May.

Renard was a top candidate for the position, particularly after negotiations with German coach Bruno Labbadia fell through, leaving Nigeria’s national team without a permanent coach.

Renard confirmed that the NFF made him the most lucrative offer of his career. However, after careful consideration, he declined the opportunity.

Speaking with French outlet *L’Équipe*, Renard explained, “I almost went to Nigeria. I weighed the pros and cons for a few days, even weeks, before eventually turning it down. It was the best offer I’ve had so far, but it didn’t suit me in the end.”

Meanwhile, Augustine Eguavoen, who is currently serving as interim coach, is preparing the Super Eagles for the upcoming 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Libya.

Eguavoen, who has led the team in the past, expressed his interest in a permanent role but outlined key conditions, including a long-term contract, patience, and continuous support from the NFF.

Eguavoen said, “If I were to take the job permanently, I’d need to sit down, reflect, and think deeply because it’s not a small task. I’d need a long-term contract, patience, and clauses in the deal because you don’t win every day.”

Eguavoen also mentioned that his previous coaching stints were too short for him to implement his vision for the team, in contrast to the extended periods given to coaches like Clemens Westerhof and Gernot Rohr.
