“Police Explain Teargas Use at Lekki Toll Gate During Mohbad’s Candlelit Funeral”

Published

on

Lagos State Police issued a statement on Friday explaining their use of teargas to disperse a gathering at the Lekki Toll gate on September 21, a day that saw a candlelit funeral procession held in honor of the late singer Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, at Victoria Island, Lagos.

In their statement, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the police spokesman in Lagos State, emphasized that no live ammunition was discharged, and they employed crowd management strategies to handle the unruly crowd, ensuring no injuries or casualties occurred.

Hundeyin went on to address the prevalent misinformation surrounding the incident, particularly regarding the agreement made with the procession organizers. He explained that the police had an arrangement with the organizers to conclude the candlelit procession no later than 8 p.m. at Muri Okunola Park, Victoria Island. Additionally, due to heavy traffic on the Lekki-Epe Expressway, it was agreed that the Lekki Toll Gate would be off-limits.

However, after the procession concluded at Muri Okunola Park with police providing security throughout, some individuals gathered at the Lekki Toll Gate with intentions unrelated to the #justiceforMohbad initiative. This gathering violated the established agreement, prompting the police to engage the procession organizers in persuading the crowd to disperse peacefully.

Despite hours of persuasion and social media messages urging dispersal, the crowd remained defiant, and traffic on the expressway was at a standstill. Given their prior experience with such situations and the potential for chaos, the police decided to use teargas, considering it the least harmful method to disperse the crowd, following the failure of verbal and social media-based persuasion.

The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Mr. Idowu Owohunwa, issued a warning to individuals or groups causing disturbances, stating that they would be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

The police expressed appreciation for the cooperation of the procession organizers and assured both supporters of #justiceforMohbad and Lagos residents that they would prioritize safety and security. The investigation into Mohbad’s death is ongoing, and the police called on the public to avoid creating unnecessary distractions and allow the police to conduct a conclusive and timely investigation.

Hundeyin emphasized that the police have been working closely with support groups for #justiceforMohbad and pledged to maintain this collaboration while keeping the public informed of the investigation’s progress.

Nicki Minaj’s Husband Sentenced to House Arrest After Allegedly Threatening Rapper Offset

Published

on

Nicki Minaj’s husband Kenneth Petty has been placed under house arrest for violating the terms of his probation.

The offense allegedly involved Petty, 45, threatening rapper Cardi B’s husband Offset via social media, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

In court documents filed Wednesday, Petty was sentenced to 120 days of house arrest by a federal judge in Los Angeles after he was recorded on video “making threatening remarks toward a specific individual while in the company of someone with a criminal record.”

The individual to whom he made his threatening remarks was the Migos rapper, according to the outlet — although Offset (né Kiari Kendrell Cephus) is not specifically named in the legal documents obtained by PEOPLE.

The filing stated that Petty’s recent conduct “raises concerns” over his “willingness to comply with the Court’s orders,” and that Petty’s probation officer “believes placement in the Location Monitoring Program will effectively allow for closer monitoring of Mr. Petty’s activities, limit his movements, provide a sanction for his non-compliance,” and “encourage him to reflect upon and reevaluate his current status in the community.”

Representatives for Minaj and Offset did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Minaj and Cardi B have feuded over the years both on social media and in person, with the rappers previously gitting into a fight at the Harper’s Bazaar ICONS party in 2018.

Petty’s remarks violated the probation which he was sentenced to in July 2022. At the time he was sentenced to three years probation and a year of in-home detention, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, after pleading guilty to failing to register as a sex offender in the state of California in 2020.

He was required to register as he was convicted of the first-degree attempted rape of a 16-year-old girl in 1995, for which he was sentenced to 18 to 54 months and ultimately served four years in prison.

Petty’s alleged rape victim previously filed a lawsuit against Minaj, 40, and her husband, in which she accused the pair of attempting to intimidate her into dropping her rape accusation in 2021. However, the case against Minaj was dropped the following year, according to documents obtained by PEOPLE.

“The case against Nicki was voluntarily dismissed. The case against Kenneth Petty is still ongoing. Stay tuned!” Hough’s lawyer, Tyrone Blackburn, told PEOPLE at the time.

Minaj and Petty first met in high school and lost touch before reconnecting in 2018. The pair married in October 2019 and welcomed a son nicknamed Papa Bear a year later on Sept. 30, 2020.
