Fubara: No cause for worry over Appeal Court judgment

Gov. Siminalayi Fubara has assured that there was no cause to worry over the recent pronouncements of the appeal court on the status of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

The Governor said there is no cause to worry about the verdict of the Court of Appeal because God has prepared him a table of blessings in the presence of his enemies.

Fubara who spoke to journalists after the inspection of the reconstruction work at the Zonal Hospital in Bori town, Khana Local Government Area however assured the people of the state of his unwavering commitment to providing critical infrastructure required for the speedy development of Rivers.

“I know that a lot of you will be wondering what is going on and all that. Government has its own challenges. If you go to the book of Psalm 23 verse 5, in the Bible, it said that God prepares a table before you; it can be before anybody.

“But there is an underlined word that should be noted there: it said ‘in the presence of your enemies’. So, it means that nothing comes easy.

“I want to assure everyone of you and the good people of Rivers State, that we are not deterred. We have made our promises, we will continue to give you good governance, no matter how difficult it is.

“But, like I said before, the worse is over. We are moving on to ensure that we continue to provide what is needed for the development of our state,” he said.

At a World Press Conference held on Friday, Governor Fubara claimed that the police had been acting on the instructions of former governor Nyesom Wike to disrupt the 5th October 2024 election.

Governor Fubara stated that all legal, security, and logistical preparations for the election were finalised, and there was no reason for the police to obstruct the process.

He revealed that the police tried to raid the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) headquarters and steal sensitive electoral materials, but their efforts were thwarted.

“In the early hours of Friday, I received a report that police had invaded the RSIEC office,” said Governor Fubara. He described how he personally intervened to stop armed officers from seizing electoral materials, calling their actions a blatant attack on democracy in Rivers State.

Governor Fubara questioned why the Nigeria Police were acting against the state, especially when a court had ruled in favour of holding the election with full security provided by police and other agencies. He called the police’s actions illegal, suggesting they were being used as pawns in a larger political scheme.

Despite these challenges, Governor Fubara assured the people of Rivers State that the election would proceed as planned. He emphasised that the state’s actions are in line with both the Supreme Court’s directives and the agreement between the President and State Governors to uphold democratic processes.

Fubara criticised the selective application of law in Rivers, stating that other states are holding their local government elections without police interference. He expressed his disappointment with the police’s stance, questioning their loyalty to the Nigerian Constitution.

The governor called on all security agencies to ensure a peaceful election and warned that any attempt to create unrest would be the responsibility of the police.
