Minister Orders Probe into Alleged Bribery in Nigerian Correctional Service

The Minister of Interior orders a probe into alleged bribery in Nigerian prisons following claims by Bobrisky that officials arranged for him to serve his sentence in a private apartment.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has ordered an investigation into alleged bribery within the Nigerian Correctional Service following claims by Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, that he served his sentence in a private apartment arranged by officials.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has directed a thorough investigation into allegations of bribery and corruption within the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).

This directive follows a viral voice note shared by social media influencer Martins Otse, a.k.a. VeryDarkMan, where Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, claimed that after his sentencing for abuse of the naira notes in April, his godfather, with the help of the Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, arranged for him to serve his sentence in a private apartment rather than in a prison.

In the voice note, Bobrisky alleged that a bribe of N10 million was paid to facilitate this arrangement, claiming he spent his six-month sentence in a private apartment near the prison.

Additionally, Bobrisky allegedly stated that he paid N15 million to officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to drop money laundering charges against him.

The allegations have sparked significant controversy, prompting the minister to order an immediate and comprehensive investigation.

Tunji-Ojo emphasized that his administration would not tolerate any form of corruption or unprofessionalism within the paramilitary services under his ministry.

The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, has been appointed to lead the special investigative team.

Meanwhile, human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) has denied any involvement in the matter and has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to VeryDarkMan to retract statements linking him to Bobrisky.

Falana’s legal team, in a pre-action letter, demanded an apology and retraction, threatening legal action if their demands are not met.

The letter condemned the social media post as defamatory, describing it as a baseless attempt to tarnish Falana’s reputation.

Bobrisky EFCC bribery allegations

Bobrisky is under investigation by the EFCC after claiming to have bribed officials to dismiss money laundering charges against him.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken controversial cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, into custody for questioning regarding his claims of bribing officials within the agency.

The allegations arose after a viral audio recording surfaced, in which Bobrisky purportedly stated that he paid N15 million to some unnamed EFCC officials to drop money laundering charges against him.

According to an EFCC source, Bobrisky’s interrogation began shortly after his arrival in Abuja, where he was transported after failing to respond to multiple invitations from the commission.

“He was interrogated for hours upon his arrival here. He is still with us as I speak (8:30 pm),” the source reported.

EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, confirmed that Bobrisky could face new charges if his allegations against the EFCC were found to be untrue.

“Bobrisky is on his way to Abuja as we speak,” he stated. The commission’s investigation was triggered by the claims made in the recording shared by activist Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan.

Earlier this week, Bobrisky was removed from an Amsterdam-bound KLM flight at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos while attempting to leave the country for London.

He later posted on Instagram about his arrest, claiming he sustained injuries during a confrontation with immigration officers.

A top EFCC source clarified that Bobrisky was detained to substantiate his bribery allegations. “He accused us of bribery and corruption; we invited him severally, but he did not show up. He who alleges must be ready to prove,” the source remarked, emphasizing the seriousness of the claims.

Bobrisky had reportedly been on the commission’s watch list, making it unlikely that he could flee the country unnoticed.

The EFCC has underscored the gravity of his allegations, noting that charges could be brought against him for providing false information if his claims are unsubstantiated.

As of now, Bobrisky remains in EFCC custody, with the commission indicating that they will release him once he provides evidence of his claims regarding the alleged bribery.

In his post, Nasty Blaq highlighted the troubling trend of exploiting Davido’s goodwill. “The disrespect Davido is getting is way too much sha,” he lamented. “Man just wants to help people, and that’s all.”

Blaq’s comments come in the wake of a public dispute involving content creator Korty EO, who accused Davido and his team of instructing her not to release an interview video she filmed with the singer.

Initially granted permission to share the footage, Korty reported that Davido’s team later requested her to withhold the video, leaving her confused about the reasoning behind the change.

Expressing her frustration on her X handle, Korty remarked, “They [Davido’s team] agreed that I should re-edit this video and now have said I must not post the video for reasons I still don’t understand. I am not scared of anyone, but I am wise enough to stay out of battles I’m not equipped for.”
