APC stakeholders in Adamawa call for urgent reconciliation to save party’s future

Some prominent past leaders and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Adamawa State have voiced concerns over the party’s dwindling fortunes in the state, urging immediate reconciliation efforts to avert further decline.

The APC, which failed to secure the governorship seat in both the 2019 and 2023 elections, has been grappling with internal divisions that threaten its future, according to party stakeholders.

A group of concerned APC members, led by former state deputy chairman Saidu Naira, gathered in Yola on Sunday to discuss the party’s challenges and call for urgent action.

Naira and other stakeholders expressed that if the party fails to address its internal issues, it risks losing any hope of success in the 2027 elections.

“If the party and members have largely been ignored, now is the time that our leaders must reach out and make the party a united and strong front,” Naira stated during the meeting.

He explained that discontent among members is leading to defections, with many already leaving the party for other political groups.

The group also alleged that no significant or sincere reconciliation efforts have been made since the 2023 election, further fuelling dissatisfaction.

According to Naira, many APC members feel abandoned by the leadership and are frustrated with what they perceive as the hijacking of the party at the state level by a few powerful individuals.

In light of these concerns, Naira called on President Bola Tinubu and APC national chairman, Umar Ganduje, to intervene in order to restore the party’s unity and relevance in the state.

Specifically, he appealed to Ganduje to form a committee and send delegates to Adamawa to address the issues and allow the party to regain its focus.

The call for reconciliation and unity within the APC comes at a critical time, as the party faces the risk of further fragmentation in the lead-up to future elections.

Without swift action to heal internal divisions, many believe that the APC’s prospects in Adamawa may continue to diminish.

Segun Sowunmi, a prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former spokesman for Atiku Abubakar’s presidential campaign, has disclosed that the former vice president is yet to make a decision regarding the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Sowunmi revealed that despite Atiku’s silence on his intentions, his body language suggests he may be considering a third consecutive bid for the presidency.

However, Sowunmi noted that Atiku remains in a reflective mood following his experiences in the past elections.

“Atiku Abubakar is one man I love with my bones. The heart will decay quickly but the bone is the last thing that will decay,” Sowunmi said, using a metaphor to express his respect and loyalty.

Sowunmi recounted his repeated attempts to clarify Atiku’s intentions, stating:

“I have asked him twice, ‘Are you running? Are you done? If you are running, what do we do with this structure? If you’re not done, we have to do something different.’”

The PDP chieftain emphasised the weight of Atiku’s decision, acknowledging the challenges and betrayals the former vice president has endured over the years.

“No human being that has had the kind of experience, challenges, and even the kind of betrayal Atiku has endured should not reflect deeply before saying, ‘I’m going to run,’” Sowunmi remarked.

Atiku, who served as Nigeria’s vice president from 1999 to 2007, contested the presidential elections in 2019 and 2023 but was unsuccessful on both occasions.

The Adamawa State All Progressives Congress (APC) has declared its commitment to reclaim the state from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2027 elections.

Senator Muhammed Mana, the leader of the newly formed reconciliation committee, assured members that efforts to resolve internal crises and strengthen the party at the grassroots would begin immediately.

The APC’s state chapter has been grappling with internal divisions stemming from disputes during the primaries and general elections.

In response, the party’s National Secretariat established an eight-member reconciliation team led by Mana. Other notable members include Senators Bello Tukur, Abubakar Girei, Binta Masi, Yusuf Buba Yakubu, Dr Bridget Zidon, and Isa Baba.

Following a strategic meeting held at the APC national secretariat in Abuja, Mana explained that the committee’s mandate, as directed by National Chairman Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, is to unify members and restore the party’s standing in Adamawa State.

“Adamawa has always been a critical APC stronghold, and we are determined to restore it to its former glory. Our strategy involves engaging party members at the unit, ward, and local government levels to foster unity,” Mana stated.

The committee plans to appeal to aggrieved members who felt sidelined during the primaries and elections. Mana emphasised the importance of rebuilding grassroots connections, saying, “We will visit every level of the party structure to ensure inclusivity and collaboration. Our ultimate goal is to create a platform for unity and prepare the next generation of leaders.”

The Athena Centre, a non-partisan research institute, recently released a report accusing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of compromising the electoral process.

In response, Afegbua, speaking during an interview on Channels Television, criticised the report, claiming it was influenced by the PDP’s narrative.

“Athena Centre’s report is partisan and only echoes the PDP’s thoughts. The opposition are merely being bad losers,” he said.

The APC chieftain further emphasised the transparency of the electoral process and urged stakeholders to respect the outcome rather than propagate unfounded allegations.
