Your life matters, FG tells Nigerians on World Suicide Prevention Day, calling for mental health awareness, reducing stigma, and community support

Your life matters— this powerful message was delivered by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare as Nigeria joined the world to mark World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10, 2025.

The Ministry urged renewed action to protect lives and reduce stigma surrounding mental illness.

World Suicide Prevention Day, established in 2003 by the International Association for Suicide Prevention and the World Health Organization, focuses on raising awareness about suicide as a preventable public health issue.

The 2025 theme, “Creating Hope Through Action,” highlights how small acts of empathy can save lives.

On its official X handle, the Ministry shared, “Hey, Nigeria… surprise surprise: we actually care about your mental health more than you think.

Today is WorldSuicidePreventionDay2025, and while we can’t give you free jollof therapy or a hug through this screen, we can remind you of this: your life matters, and hope is real.”

The Ministry stressed that Nigeria is scaling up mental health responses.

The National Mental Health Policy now integrates mental health into primary healthcare, and the 2023 Mental Health Act strengthens rights and services for those living with mental health conditions.

Efforts are underway to expand awareness campaigns and crisis support nationwide. The Ministry emphasized that suicide prevention is a shared responsibility involving communities, families, faith leaders, and workplaces.

Despite thousands of lives lost annually, stigma remains a major barrier in Nigeria, often causing many cases to go unreported.

The Ministry encouraged Nigerians to check in on loved ones, listen without judgment, and seek professional support when needed.

By aligning with global efforts, Nigeria reinforced a hopeful message: “Feelings change. Pain is temporary, hope is real.”
