Ahmed Musa retirement marks the end of a 15-year Super Eagles career as Nigeria’s most capped player and a key figure in AFCON and World Cup history

Ahmed Musa, Nigeria’s most capped international footballer and a former Super Eagles captain, has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an illustrious 15-year career with the national team to an end.

The 33-year-old made the announcement on Wednesday afternoon via a statement shared on social media, reflecting on his journey, milestones and the pride of representing Nigeria at the highest level.

After debuting for the Super Eagles in 2010, Musa went on to earn 111 caps, a national record, establishing himself as one of the most enduring and influential players of his generation.

“After a lot of thought, I have decided to retire from international football, bringing to an end almost 15 years with the Super Eagles,” Musa said. “From the very first call-up, wearing the green and white meant everything to me.”

Recalling the early phase of his career, Musa said he was simultaneously invited to Nigeria’s U-20, U-23 and senior national teams, a demanding period that shaped his commitment to the national cause.

“I was young, still learning, and always travelling, but I never complained. Whenever Nigeria called, I showed up,” he said.

The forward played a central role in Nigeria’s triumph at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa and carved out a unique place in the country’s World Cup history.

Musa became the first Nigerian to score more than once in a FIFA World Cup match when he netted twice against Argentina at the 2014 tournament in Brazil.

Four years later, he struck twice again against Iceland at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, making him the first Nigerian to score in two separate World Cups.

“To score four goals at the World Cup and be Nigeria’s highest goalscorer on that stage is something I am truly grateful for,” he said, describing those moments as among the most treasured of his career.

Musa expressed gratitude to his teammates, coaches, administrators and fans, acknowledging their support throughout his time with the national team.

“As I step away from international football, I do so with peace and gratitude. I know I gave my best,” he said, adding that his bond with the Super Eagles would remain unbroken.

At club level, Musa returned to Kano Pillars in October 2024 for a third spell and currently combines his playing duties with the role of general manager ahead of the 2025–26 Nigeria Professional Football League season.
