Nigeria says recent diplomatic tension with the US is largely resolved, citing dialogue and a $5.1bn health cooperation agreement

The Federal Government has announced that its recent diplomatic disagreement with the United States has been largely resolved following sustained engagement between the two countries.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this on Monday during a year-end press conference in Abuja, noting that the tension arose after comments by U.S. President Donald Trump alleging mass killings of Christians in Nigeria and hinting at possible military intervention.

According to Idris, Nigeria handled the situation with maturity and principle, resulting in a stronger partnership.

“The recent diplomatic spat with the United States has been largely resolved through a firm, respectful engagement culminating in a strengthened partnership between America and Nigeria,” he said.

The minister highlighted a newly signed bilateral health cooperation agreement as evidence of improved ties.

Nigeria and the United States agreed to a five-year Memorandum of Understanding valued at $5.1 billion, aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system.

The United States will provide $2.1 billion in grant funding, while Nigeria will commit $3 billion.

Idris described the deal as the largest co-investment under the America First Global Health Strategy.

He said the agreement would enhance healthcare delivery, save lives, and attract further investment, underscoring that concerns about a breakdown in Nigeria–U.S. relations were unfounded.

Idris also noted that Nigeria is asserting itself as a confident, strategic partner globally, defending its national interests while fostering beneficial international partnerships.

He added that newly appointed Nigerian ambassadors would assume duties in 2026, following National Assembly clearance, further strengthening bilateral relations.
