Obidient Movement and ADC harmonise political structures in Borno and Yobe to strengthen opposition unity and grassroots mobilisation ahead of 2027 elections

The Obidient Movement and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have formally harmonised their political structures in the North-East as part of preparations for the 2027 general elections.

Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, confirmed the alignment in a statement shared via X (formerly Twitter), noting that the process was finalised on Saturday during separate meetings in Maiduguri, Borno State, and Damaturu, Yobe State.

Tanko described the development as “another significant step in our collective political journey,” emphasising that the harmonisation aims to build a broad-based, people-centred political platform and strengthen grassroots mobilisation ahead of the elections.

In Maiduguri, Tanko met with the Obidient Movement Collegiate Team led by Ayuba Wakawa and the Borno State interim leadership of the ADC, headed by Alhaji Ali Bukar Wurge.

He said the ADC leadership “warmly welcomed the Obidient Movement into the party,” describing the collaboration as “timely, strategic, and necessary for strengthening the party’s grassroots presence.”

Tanko added that the ADC reaffirmed its commitment to internal democracy, inclusiveness, and participatory politics, with a focus on empowering youths, women, and community leaders as “key drivers of sustainable political change.”

A similar meeting was held in Damaturu, Yobe State, where Tanko met with Prof Muhammad Jawa alongside the Obidient Movement Collegiate Team led by Mallam Haruna Zaana.

Both sides reiterated shared values and a common resolve to expand political engagement and citizen participation in the state.

“This is action time,” Dr Tanko declared, urging members to move beyond mobilisation rhetoric toward practical political organising.

He called on Obi supporters to remain steadfast, saying, “We must rise with unity, purpose, and determination to reclaim our country and rebuild its future.”

The Obidient Movement, primarily composed of supporters of Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi in 2023, has emerged as a significant national political force and is now formalising alliances to strengthen its influence ahead of the next general election.
