INEC defends 2027 election dates, citing constitutional provisions, while consulting stakeholders over Ramadan concerns

The Independent National Electoral Commission has firmly defended its decision to schedule Nigeria’s 2027 general elections for February 20 and March 6, insisting that the timetable strictly complies with constitutional and regulatory provisions.

In a press statement signed by National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the commission said the dates were not arbitrarily selected but are anchored in the 1999 Constitution as amended, the Electoral Act 2022 and the commission’s 2019 Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections.

The commission explained that Paragraph 2 of its regulations provides that presidential and National Assembly elections shall hold on the third Saturday of February in a general election year, while governorship and State Houses of Assembly polls are to take place two weeks later.

“In faithful observance of these extant legal and regulatory provisions,” the commission fixed Saturday, February 20, 2027, for the presidential and National Assembly elections and Saturday, March 6, 2027, for governorship and state assembly contests.

The clarification follows criticism from political figures and religious stakeholders who argue that the February 20 date falls within the Ramadan fasting period and could affect turnout in predominantly Muslim communities.

While maintaining that it acted within the law, the commission signalled that it may not be rigid.

The electoral body disclosed that consultations with stakeholders are ongoing and that it could seek legislative intervention if adjustments become necessary, provided any changes remain consistent with constitutional and statutory requirements.

The commission reiterated its commitment to transparency and inclusivity, pledging to keep the public informed of further developments.

Under Nigeria’s electoral framework, the Independent National Electoral Commission is constitutionally empowered to fix election dates within legally defined timelines before the expiration of existing mandates.

The 2027 polls will mark the next nationwide contest since the 2023 elections that produced President Bola Tinubu and a new National Assembly.

The exercise is widely expected to test reforms introduced under the Electoral Act 2022, including the deployment of technological tools such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System and the INEC Result Viewing portal.
