Lagos drone security initiative aims to enhance intelligence gathering and rapid response with Nigerian Air Force and Police Airwing partnerships

Lagos State Government announced plans to deploy surveillance drones across the state on Monday, in a strategic partnership with the Nigerian Air Force and the Nigeria Police Airwing.

The initiative, revealed by Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Security Trust Fund, Ayodele Ogunsan, aims to enhance intelligence gathering and improve rapid response to emerging security threats.

Speaking at a press conference marking his first 100 days in office, Ogunsan said the Fund would sign a Memorandum of Understanding with both security agencies to support coordinated air-based operations.

“The Fund will work towards signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Nigerian Air Force and the Nigerian Police Airwing to support aerial surveillance across Lagos State,” he said.

“This will include the deployment of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, also known as drones, to significantly enhance intelligence gathering, rapid response capability and coordinated security operations.”

Ogunsan emphasised the critical need for sustained investment in Lagos’ security infrastructure to safeguard lives, property and economic activity in Nigeria’s commercial hub.

Reviewing his first 100 days in office, he highlighted the Fund’s expansion of its financial base through strategic fundraising, including crowdfunding initiatives, and strengthened engagement with private and public sector stakeholders.

The Fund has also added 80 operational and patrol vehicles to the state’s security network, with more expected, to improve visibility and response time.

Ogunsan further disclosed plans to repair and restore abandoned Armoured Personnel Carriers, returning them to active service.

“Importantly, we have embarked on statewide repairs and restoration of abandoned Armoured Personnel Carriers, returning them to operational use,” he said.

Looking ahead, the Fund intends to implement statewide training programmes for security personnel to enhance professionalism, tactical competence and service delivery.

Ogunsan reaffirmed the Fund’s commitment to transparency, accountability, innovation and strong partnerships in sustaining a safer environment for Lagos residents.

The Trust Fund has already recorded significant contributions under the new leadership, including a N1 billion donation from Globacom and a commitment from a sole donor to construct a permanent office complex for the Fund.

The drone security initiative aligns with broader state efforts under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to strengthen safety across Lagos.
