Ogun labourer shot dead during demolition exercise after clash with military; investigations ongoing into the tragic incident

Oluwaseyi Adeoye, a labourer working with the Ogun State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, was shot dead during a demolition exercise at Orile-Imo along the Sagamu-Abeokuta Expressway on Monday, February 24, 2026. The incident occurred when military personnel clashed with officials enforcing demolition orders.

The deceased, who had been tasked with demolishing unlawful structures, was struck by a bullet amid a confrontation between the demolition team and soldiers stationed at the site.

Adeoye reportedly died instantly, and his body was taken to the State General Hospital Morgue in Ijaye, Abeokuta.

Eyewitnesses described how the demolition team, led by an official identified as Mr Hamzat, insisted on pulling down three coaches despite the military’s objections.

Makinde Ibrahim, a fellow labourer, said the situation escalated when a soldier opened fire in frustration.

Kolawole Obadeyi, Chairman of the Concrete Dealers Association, criticised the demolition leadership for pressing on despite the presence of soldiers, suggesting that reinforcements or retreat could have prevented the tragedy.

Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer Oluseyi Babaseyi confirmed the death and stated that investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Tunji Odulami, described the incident as unfortunate and said authorities are working to identify the soldier responsible.

Odulami also expressed condolences to the family of Oluwaseyi Adeoye and assured that the government would provide compensation.

The tragic death has raised concerns about coordination between state demolition teams and military personnel, highlighting the potential dangers faced by workers enforcing government directives.
