Amazon and OpenAI announce a $50bn multi-year partnership to accelerate AI innovation for enterprises, startups, and consumers, including stateful runtime environments

Amazon and OpenAI have announced a multi-year strategic partnership, with Amazon committing $50bn to accelerate artificial intelligence innovation globally across enterprises, start-ups, and consumers.

The initial investment will start with $15bn, followed by an additional $35bn subject to certain conditions, strengthening collaboration amid intensifying competition in the AI market.

Under the agreement, OpenAI and Amazon Web Services (AWS) will jointly develop a Stateful Runtime Environment powered by OpenAI’s models and made available through Amazon Bedrock.

The environment allows AI systems to retain context, access compute resources and memory, and operate across software tools and data sources, enabling developers to manage long-running projects and workflows efficiently.

“The platform will integrate with Amazon Bedrock AgentCore and AWS infrastructure services so that AI applications and agents can operate alongside existing enterprise workloads.

The Stateful Runtime Environment is expected to launch in the coming months,” OpenAI said.

As part of the deal, AWS will become the exclusive third-party cloud provider for OpenAI Frontier, an advanced enterprise platform that enables organisations to deploy and manage AI agents operating across business systems with shared context and enterprise-grade security.

The partnership also expands the companies’ existing cloud infrastructure agreement.

OpenAI and AWS will increase their previous $38bn multi-year arrangement by an additional $100bn over eight years, with OpenAI set to consume roughly two gigawatts of AWS Trainium computing capacity.

The agreement will utilise AWS’s Trainium3 and next-generation Trainium4 chips, expected in 2027, which promise higher compute performance, expanded memory bandwidth, and increased high-bandwidth memory capacity to support sophisticated AI workloads.

OpenAI said this long-term capacity arrangement will allow it to scale AI services globally while enabling enterprises to access advanced AI on-demand through AWS without managing complex infrastructure.
