Plateau Rim Community Attack leaves two dead and several injured after gunmen storm Riyom LGA village in a late-night assault

Suspected armed gunmen on Tuesday night attacked Rim community in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, killing two residents and leaving several others injured in a violent assault that has deepened concerns over rising insecurity in the region.

The attackers, reportedly suspected to be armed herders, stormed the community at about 10:30 pm when residents had already gone to bed, opening fire sporadically for over 30 minutes before fleeing into surrounding bushes and rocky terrain.

Residents said the Plateau Rim Community Attack caught the village completely off guard, with no prior warning or incident suggesting a reprisal attack.

A community member, Dusu Bulus, described the incident as unprovoked, saying the gunmen struck suddenly and left destruction in their wake before security forces could respond.

Also confirming the attack, the National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Movement, Rwang Tengwong, said the invasion caused panic across the village and surrounding areas.

“Gunmen stormed Rim Village around 10pm on Tuesday night and opened fire sporadically. As of now, two people have been confirmed killed while two others sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital,” Rwang Tengwong said.

He described the incident as another tragic episode in the recurring wave of insecurity affecting parts of Riyom and other nearby communities, urging security agencies to intensify patrols and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Efforts to reach the spokesperson of the Plateau State Police Command, SP Alfred Alabo, and the Operation Enduring Peace for comment were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.

The latest attack adds to growing fears among residents of Plateau communities, where recurring violence has continued to disrupt livelihoods and heighten calls for stronger security intervention.
