Niger State IED threat foiled as troops uncover and neutralise explosives along a major route, preventing potential casualties in Borgu LGA

Troops operating in Niger State successfully uncovered and neutralised an IED threat along the Wawa–Babana road, averting what could have resulted in significant harm to civilians and security personnel during an ongoing military operation.

The Niger State IED threat was detected during patrols conducted by troops of Operation SAVANNAH SHIELD, who were advancing along the route at about 10:00 a.m. when they encountered explosive devices concealed along the axis.

The operation was later confirmed in a post shared on X by security analyst Zagazola Makama.

The troops, drawn from the 22 Brigade Sector 1 of Operation Safe Secure Support and working in coordination with the 221 Battalion, were initially assessing a bridge damaged by an earlier explosion when they identified the hidden device.

In response, the personnel adjusted their movement and created an alternative path to bypass the affected section of the road.

As the patrol progressed further towards Luma, another explosive device was discovered along the route. The second device was subsequently recovered and safely disposed of by an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team deployed to the area.

The swift detection and neutralisation of the explosives highlight ongoing efforts by security forces to secure vulnerable routes and protect communities in Niger State from emerging threats.

The operation also underscores the importance of coordinated patrols and specialised units in responding to explosive hazards in conflict-prone areas.
