NAFDAC clears BON bread over viral claim that the loaf stayed fresh for two months without spoiling

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has cleared Food & Food Integrated Company Limited of any regulatory violation following an investigation into a viral social media claim that one of its bread products remained unspoiled for two months.

The agency disclosed its findings in a statement issued on Sunday by its Director General, Christianah Adeyeye, after conducting laboratory analysis and inspections linked to the BON Bread viral claim.

The controversy began on April 13, 2026, when a blogger identified as Love Dooshima shared a video online expressing concern over a loaf of bread she claimed remained fresh for nearly two months without developing mould.

Although the blogger did not mention any brand in the video, Food & Food Integrated Company Limited later identified the product as its own and denied the allegations.

The video quickly gained widespread attention on social media, prompting the company to file a N50 million lawsuit against Dooshima.

The blogger was later detained by the Nigeria Police Force on April 20 after honouring an invitation at the Zone 7 Police Headquarters in Abuja over allegations bordering on cyberstalking, fraud, and mischief.

She was subsequently released around 12:30 a.m. the following day following reported intervention by the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu.

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission also launched a separate probe into the matter.

According to Adeyeye, NAFDAC initiated its investigation due to what she described as the “hue and cry over the internet” and the need to provide the public with scientific and evidence based clarification.

The agency said its Greater FCT Directorate conducted an inspection of the company’s bakery in Abuja on April 20, while bread samples were collected from both the production facility and the open market for laboratory testing.

“Investigation by the agency revealed that the company in question commenced bread production in the year 2006 and has successfully gone through several product licence renewals without any penalties or recalls,” Adeyeye stated.

She explained that laboratory findings confirmed the use of calcium propionate as a preservative and noted that the quantity used fell within globally accepted safety limits under the Codex Alimentarius standards.

“Laboratory findings revealed that calcium propionate was used as preservative, and that the amount of the preservative used was within the limits specified in Codex Alimentarius,” she said.

Adeyeye further disclosed that all bread samples tested from both the factory and open market were satisfactory and did not contain harmful substances such as bromate or non nutritive sweeteners.

“The bread samples analysed did not contain objectionable substances, including bromate and non nutritive sweeteners,” she added.

The NAFDAC boss stressed that food manufacturers are permitted to adopt approved preservation methods capable of extending shelf life provided such practices comply with internationally recognised food safety standards.

“As a result of the foregoing, the public is hereby informed that the company is not in violation of any of the agency’s regulations,” Adeyeye stated.

She also urged Nigerians to report concerns involving regulated products directly to NAFDAC through its offices, electronic platforms, or call centre before escalating such matters on social media.

According to her, direct reporting would allow complaints to be investigated thoroughly and discreetly.
