AC Milan sack Massimiliano Allegri after failing to qualify for the Champions League, triggering a major club restructuring

Italian Serie A club AC Milan have sacked head coach Massimiliano Allegri following a disappointing end to their season that saw the club miss out on UEFA Champions League qualification for the second consecutive year.

The decision came after a 2–1 defeat to Cagliari Calcio on the final day of the Serie A campaign, a result that confirmed AC Milan’s drop from third to fifth place and triggered an immediate internal review at the club.

The club’s ownership group, RedBird Capital Partners, described the season as unacceptable in a strongly worded statement, despite acknowledging that the team had spent large portions of the campaign in strong league positions.

“For the majority of this season, we were in the top two positions in Serie A, with a credible shot at competing for the Scudetto. The final stretch was completely inconsistent with the performance up to that point,” the ownership group said.

They further labelled the campaign an “unequivocal failure” and confirmed that a comprehensive restructuring of football operations would follow.

The shake-up has extended beyond the coaching role, with chief executive Giorgio Furlani, sporting director Igli Tare, and technical director Geoffrey Moncada also leaving their positions as part of the overhaul.

Massimiliano Allegri’s dismissal ends his second spell in charge of the Rossoneri, having returned to the club only last year.

He previously managed AC Milan between 2010 and 2014, guiding them to the Serie A title in the 2010–11 season and the Italian Super Cup the following year.

The club’s late-season collapse proved decisive, with seven defeats in their final 14 league matches allowing rivals to overtake them in the race for Champions League qualification.

AC Milan are now expected to begin the search for a new manager as part of a wider rebuilding project aimed at restoring competitiveness at the top level of Italian football.
