Oyo school abduction sparks reaction from VeryDarkMan, who urges nationwide solidarity until abducted pupils and teachers are freed

Nigerian media personality and activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, has called for nationwide solidarity actions following the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oyo State.

The social commentator made the appeal in a video that gained widespread attention on social media, where he criticised what he described as Nigerians’ tendency to quickly move on from serious national issues.

Reacting to the Oyo School Abduction, VeryDarkMan argued that the country’s ability to rapidly shift attention from tragic events often weakens public pressure on authorities and reduces support for victims.

According to him, Nigerians frequently view their resilience as a strength, but he believes it can also become a disadvantage when critical issues are forgotten before they are resolved.

“Nigerians are cursed with one thing, they think it’s a blessing but it’s a curse, they know how to move on quickly,” he said.

The activist urged public school teachers across the country to stand in solidarity with their abducted colleagues by temporarily withdrawing their services until those held captive regain their freedom.

VeryDarkMan also appealed to parents to keep their children at home as a show of support for the abducted pupils and to draw greater public attention to the situation.

“However, on this issue on ground, we are not going to move on until they are released. As a public school teacher, this is a time to show solidarity with the teachers in captivity by not going to work, starting from tomorrow, Monday 1st of June 2026, until those in captivity are released,” he stated.

“Please, parents, stop your children from going to school in solidarity with the little kids that are in captivity.”

The remarks have generated significant discussion online, with supporters praising the call for collective action while others debated the practicality of a nationwide boycott.

The abduction of schoolchildren and teachers has once again highlighted growing concerns about insecurity and attacks on educational institutions in parts of Nigeria.

Security challenges affecting schools have remained a major concern for parents, educators and civil society groups, particularly following a series of high-profile kidnappings recorded across the country in recent years.

VeryDarkMan’s intervention adds to mounting public pressure on authorities to secure the release of the victims and strengthen measures aimed at protecting schools and vulnerable communities.
