Okpebholo praises Edo Queens NWFL victory after unbeaten run, hailing their success as pride for Edo State and promising sports development support

Edo State Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo has congratulated Edo Queens Football Club following their impressive Edo Queens NWFL victory, describing the achievement as a proud milestone for the state and a reflection of the discipline, resilience and talent of Edo athletes.

The Edo Queens NWFL victory was sealed after the team secured a 0-0 draw in their final match against Bayelsa Queens on Sunday, a result that confirmed their position at the top of the 2026 Nigeria Women Football League standings with 10 points from five matches.

The Benin-based side recorded three wins, one draw and one defeat across the campaign, a performance that ultimately secured their status as league champions and reinforced their dominance in women’s football.

Governor Okpebholo, in a statement issued on Monday by his media aide Patrick Ebojele, commended the players, coaching staff, technical crew and management for what he described as their discipline, commitment and consistency throughout the season.

He said the Edo Queens NWFL victory represents more than sporting success, noting that it reinforces Edo State’s reputation as a leading hub for sports development in Nigeria.

The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening the sports sector through improved infrastructure, targeted investment in athletes, and policies designed to create greater opportunities for young talents across the state.

According to him, sports remain a vital tool for youth empowerment, social unity and development, adding that his government will continue to support Edo athletes to excel at both national and international levels.

“Edo Queens have made the people of Edo State proud. Their achievement reflects the spirit of excellence, hard work, and determination that defines our people,” Okpebholo said, while praising the team as worthy ambassadors of the state.

He further urged Edo athletes to remain focused and dedicated, assuring continued government backing for initiatives aimed at restoring Edo State’s position as a powerhouse in Nigerian sports.
