Gunmen killed two people during an overnight attack on Rumuodogo 2 Community in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State, with police launching an investigation into the deadly incident.

The attackers reportedly stormed the community at about 1 a.m. on Monday, breaking into homes in what residents described as a coordinated operation while searching for specific individuals.

Although the motive for the attack has yet to be officially established, the incident triggered panic across the community, forcing many residents to flee into nearby bushes for safety.

A resident identified simply as Monica, whose husband was among those attacked, alleged that the assailants came from a neighbouring community in a local government area bordering Rumuodogo 2.

According to Monica, the armed men forced their way into the family home before dragging both of them outside.

“They came by 1 a.m., broke our door and brought my husband and me outside. I was even naked when we were brought outside. They started beating my husband and shot him,” she said.

“They wanted to kill me too, but one of them said they should leave me because I am a woman.”

Monica further alleged that the attackers claimed they were retaliating over the killing of individuals whose bodies were reportedly recovered from a river in the area last Monday.

“They said our community was responsible for the killing of the persons whose dead bodies were discovered in the river last Monday,” she added.

The attack disrupted the usually quiet community, with frightened residents abandoning their homes amid fears of further violence.

The Rivers State Police Command confirmed the incident.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police Grace Iringe-Koko, said two people lost their lives and that detectives had commenced investigations to determine the motive behind the attack and identify those responsible.

“I can confirm the incident. Two persons were killed in the attack. Investigation is ongoing to ascertain the motive behind the attack and to arrest the perpetrators,” the police spokesperson said.

No arrests had been announced as of the time of filing this report.

Emohua Local Government Area has witnessed repeated incidents of cult-related violence, communal clashes and targeted attacks in recent years, prompting sustained security operations by law enforcement agencies.

Community leaders have repeatedly called for stronger security measures to prevent reprisals and protect residents from recurring violence.

The latest killings come just days after another fatal attack was reported in neighbouring Cross River State, where a man was killed during a violent land dispute in Biase Local Government Area.

While there is no evidence linking the two incidents, both underscore the continuing security concerns confronting communities in parts of southern Nigeria.
