Augustine Eguavoen urges the Super Falcons to respect Comoros ahead of their 2028 Olympic qualifier, despite Nigeria’s status as favourites

Nigeria are scheduled to face Comoros in the first leg at the Remo Stars Sports Complex in Ikenne on Friday, 9 October 2026, with the return fixture also scheduled to take place at the same venue next Tuesday.

The Super Falcons, who have won the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations a record 10 times, are considered favourites to progress because of their experience and the quality of their squad.

However, Eguavoen has stressed that Nigeria must approach the encounter with discipline and respect for their opponents rather than relying solely on their reputation.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the match, the coach expressed confidence in his team’s ability to overcome the challenge while emphasising the importance of following their game plan.

“I believe no team can come here and survive. But we are not looking down on anyone. We’re not looking down on our opponents, really, with all respect. We stick to our game plan and just make sure we deliver,” Eguavoen said.

Comoros will enter the tie following an emphatic performance in the previous qualifying round, where they defeated Sudan 30–0 on aggregate.

That result underlines their attacking threat and offers a reminder that Nigeria cannot afford to become complacent, even with their stronger pedigree in African women’s football.

For the Super Falcons, the immediate task will be to secure a positive result in the opening encounter before turning their attention to the return leg.

Nigeria’s experience on the continental stage gives them a significant advantage on paper, but Eguavoen’s message is clear: the team must translate that quality into a disciplined performance on the pitch.
