Adamawa police arrest 32-year-old Anas Dauda for unlawful firearm possession after a viral video showed him flaunting an AK-47 rifle

The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested a 32-year-old man, Anas Dauda, for unlawful possession of a firearm after a viral video surfaced showing him brandishing an AK-47 rifle.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Suleiman Nguroje, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Friday in Yola, noting that the suspect, a resident of Jalingo B area, Lamorde Ward, Mubi South Local Government Area, was apprehended following a swift intelligence operation.

According to Nguroje, the video, which showed Dauda displaying the rifle loaded with three magazines while making threatening remarks and boasting about selling or leasing the weapon, sparked panic among residents.

“The video, which caused fear and concern among residents, was promptly brought to the attention of the Command,” Nguroje said.

Acting on the directive of Commissioner of Police Dankombo Morris, operatives from the Mubi South Divisional Police Headquarters launched a targeted operation led by the Divisional Police Officer. The team successfully tracked and arrested the suspect at a remote location in Mubi town.

Nguroje said that investigation was ongoing to recover the prohibited firearm seen in the footage and determine its origin.

“Efforts are being intensified to recover the firearm and identify its source,” he added.

CP Morris has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to take over the case for discreet investigation and diligent prosecution.

Reaffirming the command’s commitment to maintaining peace, the police commissioner warned residents against acts that could jeopardise public safety or breach the law.

“The Command will not tolerate actions that disturb public peace or threaten security. We remain steadfast in protecting the lives and property of all citizens,” Morris said.

The arrest marks another proactive step by the Adamawa State Police Command in combating illegal arms possession and maintaining order in the North-East region.
