US Embassy Abuja Security Warning urges Americans to stay indoors and avoid movement ahead of the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest on Monday

The US Embassy Abuja Security Warning has advised American citizens in Nigeria’s capital to remain indoors and avoid all movement on Monday, October 20, ahead of the planned #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest.

The demonstration, organised by activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, is expected to kick off at 7 a.m. at Eagle Square, extending through the Central Business District toward the Aso Rock Presidential Villa.

In a statement released on Friday, the Embassy warned that while the organisers have described the protest as peaceful, it could escalate into violence or confrontation between demonstrators and security operatives.

“There may be roadblocks, traffic congestion, and confrontations between police and protesters that could turn violent around Eagle Square and the Central Business District,” the Embassy said.

As part of the US Embassy Abuja Security Warning, Americans were urged to avoid protest areas, stay away from crowds, and limit movement throughout the city.

It also advised that children remain home from school and that domestic staff who commute from outside Abuja should not travel on that day due to potential unrest and traffic restrictions.

The advisory further cautioned US citizens to monitor local news, maintain a low profile, and keep mobile phones charged in case of emergency.

“Avoid areas where protests are taking place. Avoid crowds. Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests,” the statement read.

The planned protest is part of a renewed call for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who has been detained since June 2021 following his extradition from Kenya.

Though Nigerian authorities have yet to issue an official statement, a heavy security presence is expected across key parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to forestall potential unrest.
