The Lagos State Police Command has arrested 18 suspects involved in the Tejuosho Market riot over power outage, following an attempted bank invasion in Surulere

The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 18 miscreants involved in a violent protest disguised as a demonstration over power outage at Tejuosho Market Phase II in Surulere.

In a statement released on Friday, the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, disclosed that the suspects were apprehended during a riot that escalated into the attempted invasion of a commercial bank and attacks on police personnel on duty.

The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, 18 September 2025, when hoodlums reportedly mobilised to unleash violence, damaging parts of the bank’s premises and attempting to breach the Market Police Post.

According to the police, Mobile Police Force (PMF) officers stationed at the bank successfully repelled the attackers, preventing a full-scale invasion and ensuring the protection of lives and property.

Additional reinforcements were deployed by the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, who directed tactical and conventional units to the scene.

“The operatives successfully dispersed the hoodlums and miscreants and arrested eighteen (18) of the suspects in the act of violence,” said DSP Oluseyi.

He added that normalcy was restored promptly, with traders and customers resuming their business activities shortly after.

The 18 suspects are currently in police custody as investigations continue.

The command says it is making “concerted efforts” to identify and arrest all others involved in the disturbance.

“They will all be prosecuted,” the statement affirmed.

Reacting to the incident, CP Olohundare Jimoh issued a strong warning against any form of violent attack on law enforcement officers or destruction of property, stating that such acts would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

“We call on all Lagosians to show utmost respect to police personnel performing their duty of protecting lives and property,” he said.
