2026 World Cup serves as a trial run to test US ability to host spectators ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, says US Olympic chief

The head of the US Olympic Committee has described the 2026 FIFA World Cup as a first “trial run” for the United States’ ability to host international spectators ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Gene Sykes made the comments on Tuesday during a meeting of International Olympic Committee members, highlighting the event’s role in testing the US’s capacity to welcome visitors from around the world.

“This entire process of welcoming visitors from other countries to the United States for sporting events is getting something of a trial run on a smaller basis, but with still a very extensive worldwide experience,” Sykes said.

He addressed questions about visa access for ticketholders, noting concerns over the tightened immigration policies under President Donald Trump.

While US authorities have created a platform to facilitate entry for athletes, officials, and support staff, the system does not currently extend to spectators.

Ethiopian IOC member Dagmawit Girmay Berhane asked how “equal opportunity” could be guaranteed for fans wishing to attend the Olympics.

Sykes suggested a dedicated team from the US State Department might be designated to handle spectator visa issues.

Supporters’ groups have raised concerns over the challenges of hosting the 2026 World Cup across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Organisers hope the tournament will provide valuable insights ahead of the larger logistical and operational demands of LA 2028.
