Lagos local government election holds July 12 as LASIEC assures credible polls, warns against vote-buying and ballot box snatching across LGs and LCDAs

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission has assured voters that the Lagos local government election scheduled for Saturday, July 12, 2025, will be credible, fair, and devoid of violence.

The Commission warned that incidents of ballot box snatching or other forms of malpractice will result in the cancellation of results in the affected areas.

Chairman of the Commission, Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (retd), gave the assurance during a press briefing held at LASIEC’s Secretariat in Yaba on Friday.

She emphasised the Commission’s preparedness across all 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas of the state.

“We are assuring voters of credible elections, free of violence or harassment. We appeal to all candidates to uphold democratic ethos,” she said.

Justice Okikiolu-Ighile disclosed that polling units have been strategically located closer to residents for ease of access.

Voting will begin at 8:00 am and close at 3:00 pm. Special provisions have been made to prioritise persons with disabilities, pregnant women, and the elderly.

She warned voters against engaging in vote-buying or any form of electoral compromise.

“Each voter must vote where they are registered. No form of inducement will be tolerated,” she said, reaffirming the Commission’s zero-tolerance stance on electoral misconduct.

In preparation for the Lagos local government election, the Commission undertook voter education campaigns across markets, bus parks, and the three senatorial districts.

She also confirmed that sensitive materials had already been distributed to LASIEC zonal offices, and staff had undergone comprehensive training and validation exercises.

To ensure security, four officers will be stationed at each polling unit. The Lagos State Police Command, in support of the electoral process, announced a partial restriction of movement to enhance safety.

Police spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed that movement restrictions will take place between 6:00 am and 3:00 pm on election day.

He clarified that this adjustment accommodates residents with medical emergencies and international travel plans.

“Members of the public are enjoined to cooperate and respect the new timing,” he stated.

With these measures in place, authorities believe the Lagos local government election will proceed smoothly and uphold democratic standards.
