FirstBank sustainable finance partnership with UNGC expands to drive SDG-focused funding, unlock capital, and support SMEs in fragile, underserved regions

The FirstBank sustainable finance partnership with the United Nations Global Compact has been reinforced as the bank continues to support capital mobilisation for development.

In a statement on Thursday, FirstBank confirmed its renewed commitment during the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development held in Seville, Spain.

The global event brought together leaders to tackle the widening SDG financing gap and explore strategies to fund development in fragile regions.

Representing the bank, Chief Risk Officer Patrick Akhidenor highlighted key efforts under the FirstBank sustainable finance partnership.

These include the Solar Equipment Financing initiative and the expanded FirstGem Fund, both aimed at boosting resilience in Nigeria’s financial ecosystem.

“We are committed to driving sustainable finance and unlocking capital for development,” said Akhidenor. “Our partnership with UNGC and participation at FfD4 underscore our focus on innovation that supports SDG financing.”

Sanda Ojambo, Chief Executive Officer of the UN Global Compact, reiterated the importance of inclusive financial tools. “The private sector must shape fit-for-purpose, scalable finance solutions. De-risking tools and blended finance models are essential to drive sustainable impact,” she stated.

Beyond conferences, FirstBank’s initiatives through its SMEConnect platform and partnerships with Development Finance Institutions showcase its operational dedication.

The bank continues to deliver tailored training, networking, and funding to SMEs in healthcare, education, retail, and other underserved sectors.
