Compressed Natural Gas in Nigeria gets $791m boost as FG targets 1M vehicle conversions, 57% emissions cut, and over 300,000 jobs through PCNGI

Compressed Natural Gas in Nigeria is experiencing a transformative leap as the Federal Government mobilizes over $791.49 million in new investments between May and June 2025.

This marks a bold acceleration in the country’s clean energy transition under the Presidential CNG Initiative (PCNGI).

Within 12 months, the initiative has attracted over $980 million, deployed 100,000+ CNG kits, and converted 1,440 vehicles across 20 states.

With more than 5,000 tricycles and 807 buses already in service, Nigeria is building an eco-friendly, affordable transport network.

PCNGI aims to convert 1 million vehicles and train 25,000 autogas technicians by 2027. The federal government plans to deploy 250,000 bi-fuel vehicles, establish 1,000 conversion workshops, and create over 300,000 indirect jobs.

Describing petrol subsidies as an economic “albatross,” the PCNGI noted Nigeria spent N1 trillion in 2023 on fuel subsidies, despite abundant natural gas reserves. The shift to CNG promises not just cleaner air but a more sustainable and empowered economy.

Already, 65 mother refueling stations, 300 conversion centres, and 175 daughter stations are being rolled out, alongside 40 electric buses.

More than 5,500 technicians have been trained, and incentive programs are reducing costs for consumers.

The initiative forecasts a 57% reduction in CO₂ emissions and N500 billion in fuel cost savings, making CNG a cornerstone of Nigeria’s energy future.
