Chimamanda Adichie supports Peter Obi, once again lending her voice in favor of the former Labour Party presidential candidate, whom she described as humble, consistent, and deeply committed to Nigeria’s future.

In a recent interview on Channels TV, the celebrated Nigerian author stated that Obi’s ambition to lead the country is not fueled by ego or greed, but by a genuine desire to serve.

“He doesn’t need to be president; he wants to be because he cares about Nigeria,” Adichie said.

“That is a very important distinction.”

Having known Obi for over 15 years, the award-winning writer described him as someone unchanged by power or public praise, saying, “He is not the kind of person who expects gratitude for doing his job.

He sees public service as a duty—not a favour.”

Adichie also took a swipe at the current state of Nigerian politics, criticizing the desperation for power among many leaders who she says are driven more by ego than a sense of responsibility.

Reflecting on her public support during the 2023 elections, she said her backing of Obi was “rooted in my love for this country” and grounded in hope for a value-driven future for Nigeria.

When asked whether Obi will run again in 2027, Adichie chose not to speculate, but she reaffirmed her respect for him:

“The person I knew 15 years ago is still the same today. Genuine, curious, consistent. That’s rare.”

In 2023, Adichie made global headlines after publishing an open letter to U.S. President Joe Biden, questioning the legitimacy of Nigeria’s elections. She also appeared at the election tribunal to show solidarity with Obi.
