NIHSA issues fresh Nigeria flood alert for 198 LGAs in 32 states and FCT, warning of high risks between Aug 7–21, 2025, with possible transport disruptions

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued a fresh Nigeria flood alert for August 2025, warning that 198 Local Government Areas (LGAs) across 32 states and the Federal Capital Territory face high to very high flood risks between August 7 and 21.

In the alert, referenced 32-25-003-06 and signed by Director General Umar Ibrahim, NIHSA attributed the threat to rising river levels** and persistent heavy rainfall nationwide.

The agency said more than 100 communities and several major transportation routes could face severe disruptions in the coming days. The projected flood impact zone covers 832 communities.

Affected states include: Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, FCT, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, and Zamfara.

NIHSA urged emergency management agencies to activate their response protocols and advised immediate evacuation planning for at-risk communities.

Residents were encouraged to monitor state-level and community-specific forecasts through NIHSA’s official flood dashboard and social media channels.

“This is part of NIHSA’s ongoing efforts to mitigate seasonal flooding, which annually displaces thousands and damages infrastructure,” the agency said.
