Peter Obi Ibom Air incident statement criticises treatment of passenger, highlighting double standards and calling for equal justice in Nigeria

Peter Obi Ibom Air incident remarks have stirred nationwide debate after the former presidential candidate condemned the handling of Miss Comfort Emmanson’s disruptive behaviour aboard a Uyo–Lagos flight.

In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Obi apologised to the Ibom Air crew for the assault they endured but sharply criticised the treatment of Emmanson, who was publicly stripped and swiftly remanded in court.

“Stripping her publicly was not only unnecessary but also represents the height of rascality and abuse by our agencies,” Obi wrote, calling the act “dehumanising” and emblematic of systemic double standards.

He contrasted her swift prosecution with the lack of consequences for another passenger accused of delaying a flight and endangering lives. “Justice in Nigeria must never be about who is poor or powerless versus who has influence,” he stressed.

Obi framed the case as part of a broader injustice that disproportionately targets the vulnerable, especially women, while more powerful offenders escape accountability.

He compared Emmanson’s treatment to that of public officials accused of large-scale corruption who often avoid public shaming or legal consequences.

Calling on the Minister of Aviation and relevant authorities for answers, Obi warned: “Justice must be just, or it is nothing at all. The rule of law based on justice for all must remain the guidepost of our democracy.”
