Nigeria CNG investments exceed $980m, boosting affordable, eco-friendly transport with rapid infrastructure growth

Nigeria CNG investments have soared above $980 million in just 18 months, marking the sector as one of the fastest-growing in the country’s energy landscape.

The surge, driven by government incentives and robust private sector participation, is transforming transportation into a more affordable and eco-friendly option for millions.

At the launch of the Portland Gas Ltd/NASENI CNG Daughter Station, Auto Conversion, and Training Centre along the Kubwa Expressway in Abuja, Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI) CEO Michael Oluwagbemi revealed that vehicle conversions have jumped from just 4,000 to nearly 100,000 within the period.

“This is easily the fastest-growing sector in Nigeria today,” Oluwagbemi said, noting that motorists can save up to 90 per cent on fuel costs by switching to CNG.

He highlighted that CNG expansion now spans 20 states and 315 conversion centres, up from just five states last year, with plans to reach at least 30 states and the Federal Capital Territory by the end of 2025.

Private investment is also driving the boom. Notable projects include a N720 billion commitment from BUA and the Nigerian Bottling Company for CNG trucks and 100 fuelling stations.

The Portland Gas station, hailed by CEO Folajimi Mohammed as a “full gas hub,” combines auto conversion, training, and refuelling, with approvals to sell liquefied petroleum gas.

Government agencies are working to prevent diversion of CNG intended for vehicles to gas-fired power plants, while the House of Representatives plans to introduce legislation to safeguard autogas supplies.

Strategic infrastructure projects, like the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano gas pipeline, aim to extend the network into northern Nigeria.

According to NASENI Director-General Khalil Halilu, placing CNG stations on major routes like Kubwa Expressway is part of a deliberate strategy to ease access and reduce queues, reflecting strong public adoption of the cleaner fuel.
