According to Army spokesperson Appolonia Anele, the localized blast occurred within a storage building of the 42 Engineers Brigade Counter Improvised Explosive Device Squadron at Ilese Barracks.

The explosion triggered a limited fire outbreak, but swift intervention by troops of the 12 Field Engineer Regiment, in collaboration with the Ijebu-Ode Fire Service, ensured the flames were quickly contained.

“No lives were lost, and no injuries were recorded. Damage was limited to the affected building and some stored materials,” Anele said, adding that a detailed assessment is underway to determine the extent of material loss.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud bang that reverberated across the community, sparking panic among residents. Preliminary accounts suggest the blast may have been caused by heat buildup in the mini store.

Anele urged residents of Ilese and surrounding areas to remain calm, assuring that the Army is working with relevant agencies to investigate the incident and prevent a recurrence.
