Kidnapped Edo Seminarians remain in captivity as the Catholic Diocese of Auchi appeals for their release, urging swift action from authorities

Kidnapped Edo Seminarians are still in captivity more than a month after their abduction from Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary in Ivhianokpodi Agenebode, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State.

Gunmen had stormed the seminary on July 10, killing a civil defence corps officer and abducting three seminarians. While one was later released, two teenage seminarians remain in the kidnappers’ den.

In a troubling video reportedly released by the abductors, the minors were seen begging their parents and the public to help secure their freedom. Their plea has triggered widespread concern and prayers across Edo State and beyond.

The Catholic Diocese of Auchi, visibly shaken by the ordeal, has appealed directly to President Bola Tinubu, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, and security agencies to intervene.

Rev. Fr. Peter Egielewa, Director of Communication of the Diocese, speaking on behalf of Bishop Gabriel Dunia, said the situation has left the church traumatised.

“As the chief shepherd of the diocese, I feel personally hurt and disturbed that my seminarians, our children, are living with armed strangers for 35 days now,” he said.

“We have been praying since their kidnap. Again I call on people everywhere to please pray with us.”

Egielewa confirmed that the diocese has maintained contact with the kidnappers, urging them to release the seminarians unharmed. He also warned that Edo North has increasingly become a dangerous zone for abductions.

“It appears kidnappers in Nigeria have suddenly found a convenient place of operation in Edo North and Edo State. Our people feel frustrated and helpless.

It shouldn’t be. We beg that Edo North be secured so that our people can once again live in peace and safety,” he said.
