Lagos State HIV campaign gets a boost as TBAs receive training to prevent mother-to-child transmission and promote safe childbirth practices

Lagos State HIV campaign has received a major boost as the government intensifies efforts to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of the virus.

Through the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency (LSACA), officials organized a two-day sensitisation programme for Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs).

The training, held at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, equipped TBAs with life-saving knowledge and safe delivery practices aimed at reducing HIV transmission during childbirth.

LSACA Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Folakemi Animashaun, described TBAs as vital partners in the Lagos State HIV campaign. She stressed that many pregnant women first consult TBAs before visiting health facilities, making their role in maternal care indispensable.

“You are not just birth attendants; you are community leaders, counsellors, and protectors of life,” Dr. Animashaun said, urging them to adopt universal safety measures, proper sterilisation, and prompt referrals for HIV-positive mothers.

She added that grassroots selection of TBAs ensures accountability and community-driven impact, reinforcing the sustainability of the programme.

Another facilitator, Mrs. Anuyimika Akinola, reminded participants that every child has the right to be born HIV-free. She encouraged TBAs to uphold professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical standards.

Participants welcomed the training. Mrs. Ayenigba Elizabeth praised the initiative, noting that the knowledge gained would help TBAs prevent HIV transmission and improve maternal health outcomes.
