Bishop Francis Okobo death at 89 announced by the Catholic Church. Nsukka Diocese mourns its late Bishop Emeritus with prayers and tributes

The Bishop Francis Okobo death has been announced by the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, marking the passing of the Bishop Emeritus of Nsukka Diocese at the age of 89.

Okobo died on Friday at the Niger Foundation Hospital, Enugu. In a statement, the Church said, “It is with total submission to the will of Almighty God and steadfast hope in the resurrection of the dead, that the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria announces the passing to eternal glory of Most Rev. Francis Emmanuel Ogbonnia Okobo.”

Born on November 4, 1936, Okobo was ordained a priest on June 4, 1966. He later became the Bishop of Nsukka Diocese on November 19, 1990, and was ordained bishop on January 6, 1991. After more than two decades of service, he retired on April 13, 2013.

The Secretariat noted that funeral details and liturgical observances would be released in due course. Meanwhile, the faithful have been urged to commend his soul to God’s mercy.

“Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen,” the statement read.
