The announcement comes amidst rising global tensions and trade restrictions from the West.

Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters that Russian President Vladimir Putin will travel to India in December for an official visit.

Before that, he will meet Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a regional summit in China next week to discuss preparations for the trip.

This development arrives shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed new tariffs on Indian goods in retaliation for New Delhi’s increasing imports of Russian oil — a move Washington sees as undermining global efforts to sanction Moscow over its ongoing war in Ukraine.

Despite these tensions, Russia and India continue to deepen economic and strategic cooperation.

India remains one of the largest buyers of Russian arms, and both nations have ramped up energy trade, defying Western pressure.

Russia’s pivot to Asian markets, especially India and China, has allowed it to maintain strong revenue streams from energy exports, even as Europe cuts ties.

Notably, India is not a signatory to the International Criminal Court, which means it is not obligated to act on the ICC’s arrest warrant against Putin.

This opens the door for an unencumbered diplomatic visit.
