Trump Ukraine peace decision expected in two weeks, with options ranging from massive sanctions to tariffs or doing nothing amid stalled Putin-Zelensky talks

Trump Ukraine peace decision could reshape the course of the war, with the US president saying Friday he would announce his stance within two weeks — a choice that may involve massive sanctions, tariffs, or doing nothing at all.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump expressed frustration over a Russian strike that hit a US-owned factory in Ukraine on Thursday. “I’m not happy about that war. I’m not happy about anything having to do with that war,” he said.

However, the president indicated he wanted to first see whether Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky could meet. “It takes two,” Trump remarked. “I think I’ll know the attitude of Russia, and, frankly, of Ukraine.”

The former businessman-turned-president described the upcoming decision as “very important,” saying his options included severe economic penalties or stepping back entirely.

“That’s whether or not it’s massive sanctions or massive tariffs or both. Or do we do nothing and say it’s your fight.”

Trump, who recently met Putin at a summit in Alaska, even displayed a photograph of the encounter reportedly sent to him by the Kremlin.

Still, his optimism about arranging a Zelensky-Putin summit has been met with skepticism, as Russia on Friday ruled out an immediate meeting.

Comparing the two leaders’ tense relationship, Trump quipped, “It’s like oil and vinegar, a little bit. They don’t get along too well, for obvious reasons.” Asked whether he might attend a potential summit, he replied, “We’ll see.”

Trump has previously set two-week timelines for major foreign policy announcements, many of which have passed without resolution.
