Akwa Ibom Disaster Risk Management Framework adopted by stakeholders to strengthen preparedness, resilience, and coordinated emergency response

Akwa Ibom Disaster Risk Management framework has been adopted by stakeholders as a participatory and inclusive instrument for guiding disaster preparedness, response, and resilience in the state.

The framework was validated during a review meeting in Uyo, bringing together Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), Civil Society Organizations, Youth Networks, Community Representatives, Development Partners, and the Private Sector.

Stakeholders emphasized that the policy provides a comprehensive and actionable approach to disaster risk reduction. They stressed the importance of moving from a reactive system to a proactive and resilient disaster management strategy.

Akwa Ibom faces multiple hazards such as flooding, coastal erosion, oil spills, fire outbreaks, building collapses, and communal conflicts. The framework, according to participants, will help the state transition to a system that prioritizes preparedness, recovery, and resilience-building.

The validated draft will be forwarded to the Akwa Ibom State Executive Council through the Ministry of Environment and SEMA for formal approval.

A communiqué issued at the end of the meeting highlighted the leadership role of young people, noting that they initiated and led the drafting process to reflect the aspirations of communities across the state.

Stakeholders also underscored the need for a centralized digital database on disaster risk management, given the state’s vulnerabilities from coastal geography, oil industry activities, and rapid urbanization.

They committed to supporting the domestication, institutionalization, and implementation of the framework across their various sectors.

This milestone marks a significant step in strengthening coordinated response systems in Akwa Ibom and building long-term resilience against recurring hazards.
