Kwara fire service contains Ilorin blaze after power surge sparks early morning fire, limiting damage to two rooms

The Kwara State Fire Service on Saturday swiftly contained a fire outbreak that damaged a six-room bungalow at Danialu Alapata Compound in the Gaa Akabi area of Ilorin, preventing a potentially devastating spread to nearby properties.

The incident occurred at about 2:11 a.m., prompting an urgent response from firefighters whose rapid intervention brought the blaze under control and limited destruction to two rooms within the building.

The Public Relations Officer of the service, Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, confirmed the development in a statement, noting that the operation successfully averted wider damage.

“The incident involved a bungalow comprising about six rooms, out of which two rooms were affected by the fire.

Through the swift efforts of the firefighters, the blaze was contained, preventing it from spreading to other parts of the building and nearby properties,” Adekunle said.

Preliminary investigations identified a power surge as the likely cause of the fire, which ignited combustible materials within the affected rooms.

The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Alabi Muhammed, described the response as decisive and urged residents to adopt preventive safety measures to reduce the risk of similar incidents.

He advised households to install surge protectors, avoid overloading electrical systems, and ensure regular inspection of wiring by qualified professionals.

He also stressed the importance of switching off electrical appliances when not in use and promptly reporting emergencies.

The incident adds to a series of recent fire outbreaks across the state. On March 12, a fire at Owode Market in Offa destroyed six shops and goods worth millions of naira, while a 10-room building was razed at Aata Compound in Ilorin earlier in the week.

Another blaze also affected a shop at Akolapo Plaza.

Despite the growing trend, authorities insist ongoing public awareness and rapid emergency response remain critical safeguards against large-scale losses.
