Isaiah Olugbemi murder sentence handed down as Nicholas Giroux receives life plus 20 years for the senseless killing of the promising boxer

Isaiah Olugbemi murder sentence has been handed down, bringing justice after the tragic killing of the Nigerian-American boxer in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.

Nicholas Giroux, 37, was sentenced to life imprisonment plus 20 years for first-degree murder and use of a firearm in a crime of violence.

Olugbemi, 27, a rising star in amateur boxing and a father, was shot multiple times on June 17, 2024, in Odenton.

Surveillance footage captured Giroux approaching Olugbemi, shooting him repeatedly, and then firing additional rounds before fleeing. Police recovered 9mm cartridge casings at the scene.

Investigators noted that Giroux had previously confronted Olugbemi and a neighbor during a cookout, brandishing a handgun. Following the murder, he confessed and led authorities to the firearm used.

State’s Attorney Anne Colt Leitess described the killing as “cruel and senseless,” emphasizing Olugbemi’s promising future and the callousness of the defendant.

“The callousness and lack of remorse on the part of this Defendant is really disturbing. He deserves this sentence. And to the family and friends of Mr. Olugbemi, I hope that today provides some sense of justice for this terrible ordeal,” she said.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorney Carolynn Grammas, with homicide detectives from the Anne Arundel County Police Department leading the investigation.

The sentence is set to run consecutively in the Division of Corrections, offering the Olugbemi family a measure of closure.
