Akwa Ibom police arrest human trafficker Alex Omosivie in Uyo, rescue two victims as suspect admits trafficking women to Libya and Burkina Faso

Akwa Ibom police arrest human trafficker Alex Omosivie, a 47-year-old from Edo State, and rescued two victims during a sting operation in Uyo.

The arrest was made on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at about 9:30 a.m. following credible intelligence, according to a statement issued by the State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, in Uyo on Sunday.

John disclosed that operatives traced Omosivie to a hotel on Ring Road 3, where he was apprehended. Two victims were rescued during the operation, though their names were withheld for security reasons.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Omosivie had trafficked two other young women in recent months: 18-year-old Odo Asuquo Asuquo to Libya in July 2025 and 16-year-old Glory Asuquo Asuquo to Burkina Faso on August 18, 2025.

The suspect, a deportee from an African country, reportedly confessed to the crime, admitting he was paid N50,000 per victim. Police have also contacted the parents of the trafficked girls to provide statements.

“The arrest was made following reliable intelligence that Mr. Omosivie frequently came to Uyo to traffic young women to various African countries for prostitution and other illicit activities,” DSP John stated.

She added that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend his accomplices, stressing that the command remains committed to dismantling trafficking networks across the state.

This arrest marks another significant step in the fight against human trafficking, a menace that continues to endanger vulnerable young women across Nigeria.
