Ciara Watkin deception case has ended in a 21-month prison sentence after a British court found the transgender woman guilty of sexually assaulting a man by falsely presenting herself as a biological female.

The sentencing took place at Durham Crown Court, where Judge Recorder Peter Makepeace KC said the victim was “totally deceived” and “would not have consented” to any sexual activity had he known Watkin was biologically male.

Watkin, 21, from Thornaby, Stockton-on-Tees, was convicted following a trial where she maintained the man “must have realised” she was transgender. Jurors rejected that claim.

According to evidence presented in court, the two first connected on Snapchat when both were 18.

Watkin used a female cartoon character as her profile photo and later met the man in person, where the sexual contact occurred.

To prevent the man from touching her genitals, Watkin falsely claimed she was menstruating.

It was only later that she confessed her biological sex. The victim told the court he was left “physically sick,” felt humiliated, and has since faced online ridicule.

“I felt part of my masculinity was taken away,” the heterosexual man said during his victim impact statement.

Prosecutor Paul Reid described how the deception had a lasting emotional impact, with the man stating he would never have consented if he had known the truth.

In her defence, Victoria Lamballe argued that Watkin acted from a place of “shame” and a “deep discomfort” with her own body.

Diagnosed with gender dysphoria, Watkin had identified as female from an early age and had faced bullying throughout school.

“She simply wanted to be loved,” Lamballe added.

However, Judge Makepeace said the case was not about gender identity but about deliberate dishonesty to obtain sexual gratification.

“At the heart of this case was your frustration at wanting sexual experiences with heterosexual males, which, by definition, you needed to deceive to achieve,” he told Watkin.

He also criticised Watkin’s behaviour during the trial, describing her as “flippant, disinterested, and bored,” and noted she showed no remorse.

Watkin will serve her sentence in a male prison, with authorities confirming that protective measures will be in place.

She has also been placed on the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years and is subject to a lifetime restraining order preventing contact with the victim.

Detective Constable Martin Scotson of Cleveland Police said, “Watkin purposely concealed her sex in order for the sexual activity to take place. I hope this conviction brings some form of closure to the victim.”
