Customs Drug Seizure at Tin Can Port uncovers illicit drugs worth over ₦2.5bn, marking a major victory against smuggling networks

According to the Nigeria Customs Service, a Customs Drug Seizure at the Tin Can Island Port Command has exposed a major smuggling attempt after officers intercepted narcotics valued at more than ₦2.5 billion.

The seizure followed a routine examination on 6 November at a bonded terminal where a 40-foot container, declared as carrying two used vehicles and household items, was found to contain concealed drugs.

Comptroller Frank Onyeka confirmed that a joint inspection involving Customs enforcement officers, the CIU, NDLEA, DSS and the Nigeria Police uncovered 500 grams of methamphetamine valued at ₦7.5 million and 49 packages of Molly weighing 105.5 kilogrammes with an estimated street value of ₦2.5 billion.

He noted that the total value stood at ₦2,507,500,000 and described the interception as a decisive demonstration of the Service’s vigilance.

Onyeka said the operation highlights ongoing attempts by criminal networks to exploit Nigeria’s trade routes.

He emphasised that this Customs Drug Seizure sends a powerful message that officers remain determined to detect and dismantle illicit activities that threaten national security, economic stability and public safety.

He also praised the guidance of Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi and the professionalism of partner security agencies.

In line with established inter-agency cooperation, the seized items were handed over to the NDLEA.

Receiving the drugs, NDLEA Commander Daniel Onyishi commended the seamless collaboration, stressing that unified efforts will ensure illicit substances do not pass through the port.

In a related development, the NCS Federal Operations Unit Zone C intercepted 151 wraps of Cannabis Sativa weighing 77.5kg and 15 wraps of Canadian Loud weighing 8.6kg.

The substances were recovered as traffickers attempted to evade detection.

Comptroller Bishir Balogun credited the success to intelligence gathering and officer vigilance, reaffirming the Service’s commitment to curbing smuggling and supporting the NDLEA’s mandate.
