Authorities confirm calm at GGC Maiduguri after a brief panic incident, urging the public to ignore false reports and rely on verified information

Authorities have confirmed that normalcy has been fully restored at GGC Maiduguri after a brief panic incident on Monday evening, urging residents to dismiss circulating false reports about the school.

The disturbance occurred around 8:20pm when some students fled their dormitories claiming they had seen masked men entering the compound.

The alarm quickly spread, prompting fear within the school community.

Dauda Iliya, Spokesperson and Media Adviser to the Governor, was the first to issue an official clarification, noting on his Facebook page that while a panic incident indeed took place, security operatives responded immediately and stabilised the environment.

He added that a delegation of senior government officials visited the school to assess the situation directly and ensure that order had been restored.

The delegation included the Commissioner of Education, the Chief Adviser on Sustainable Development and the Special Adviser on Media. Iliya appealed to the public to disregard misleading accounts circulating online.

Providing further reassurance, the Borno State Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Engr Lawan Abba Wakilbe, addressed what he described as exaggerated or inaccurate claims on social media.

He emphasised that the situation did not reflect a security breach but rather an isolated incident that understandably triggered panic among students.

He stressed that the school was safe and functioning normally.

The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, also confirmed that police deployments around the college had been strengthened.

He explained that officers had increased visibility and monitoring in and around the premises to reassure students, staff and anxious parents.

The combined statements from the Governor’s media office, the education ministry and the police aimed to calm rising concerns following the incident, particularly given the sensitive history of school-related insecurity in the North-East.

Officials reiterated that there was no existing threat at GGC Maiduguri and encouraged the public to rely on verified information from credible government and security channels.
