PRP rejects Bauchi’s proposed N298bn loan, warning it could worsen the state’s debt burden and demanding transparency from Governor Bala Mohammed

The Peoples Redemption Party, PRP, in Bauchi State has opposed the state government’s reported plan to borrow N298.15 billion, warning that the proposed loan could further worsen the state’s debt burden ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party made its position known in a statement signed by its Bauchi State secretary, Abubakar Sani, and made available to journalists on Thursday, October 22, 2026.

According to the PRP, the proposed borrowing would add significantly to Bauchi State’s existing debt, which it put at N441.69 billion.

The opposition party urged Governor Bala Mohammed’s administration to suspend the proposed borrowing and explain how previous loans obtained by the state had been spent.

The PRP said greater transparency was required in the management of the state’s finances, particularly with the 2027 elections approaching.

The party’s objection comes amid wider political debate over borrowing by state governments and whether additional loans are justified by planned infrastructure and development projects.

Beyond the proposed loan, the PRP also accused some traditional rulers in Bauchi of supporting the ruling Allied Peoples Movement, APM, and allegedly restricting opposition activities in their communities.

The party called on traditional institutions to remain neutral and provide equal access to all political parties.

It commended traditional rulers who had maintained political neutrality but warned that using traditional institutions to restrict opposition activities could generate tension and undermine their credibility within local communities.

The PRP also criticised what it described as court cases instituted by the APM against the party and its governorship candidate, Senator Shehu Buba Umar.

The party said it had not received formal notification of the latest suit and described the legal actions as attempts to distract its leadership and candidate ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

According to the PRP, previous cases involving its candidate at the state and Federal High Courts had been dismissed. It expressed confidence that the latest case would also fail.

The party, however, said it remained focused on its preparations for the 2027 election and reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing its political activities within the law.

The PRP further presented Senator Shehu Buba as a better alternative for managing Bauchi’s resources and providing leadership if elected governor.
